August is Breathe Easier Month

Gain control of your pulmonary health and breathe easy. One of the most important things you can do to alleviate breathing problems and improve you pulmonary health is to monitor yourself and keep track of anything that seems to trigger a problem over the course of a day. Once you know your triggers, you can work on eliminating them and better prepare yourself if you happen to encounter them. Go to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute for more information.

Health Care Reform: What it Means

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed into law has significant implication for employers, like NU, that offer comprehensive health benefits to employees, retirees, and their families. NU is reviewing the final legislation to determine what changes to its health plan design may be required and will work diligently to adopt any changes required in a timely manner. The bill contains a number of provisions that are of interest to retirees and employers—such as a temporary reinsurance program that would reimburse the Plan for part of pre-65 retiree health expenses, the phasing-out of the Medicare Part D “donut hole,” the establishment of health insurance exchanges, and the expansion of coverage eligibility for dependent children.

NU will keep retirees informed as details emerge, and will provide communications well in advance of any change that will impact the NUSCO Retiree Health Plan design or benefit enrollment choices. As we work through the details, we continue to uphold our commitment of providing quality health care benefits to retirees—and will work to incorporate any required changes in a way that delivers the most value. Communication regarding any known plan changes will be consolidated and included within the annual benefits Open Enrollment materials planned for distribution in October.

If you are under age 65 and retired after 1990 (or 1992 from PSNH or Yankee Gas)

Please note the following important differences for 2010:

Unless you changed your election during the annual open enrollment event last fall, you have been automatically enrolled in the Basic medical option—even if you were enrolled in Basic Plus during 2009.

  1. You have a new, high-deductible medical option called "Advanced" with a tax-advantaged health savings account. Refer to the enrollment guide (PDF: 1841KB) for more information.
  2. NU has created a new medical option modeling tool to help you determine which medical option is the best for meeting your needs and those of your family based on cost and health care usage. Go to www.NUretireemedicalmodeler.com to begin comparing your medical options. Complete instructions for using this new tool are included on page 4 of your enrollment guide.
